Crusader Rabbit's homesick ........................................

Also, I'm wonderin' ................... does anybody know of any great get-together of U.S. Marines & Diggers, 'way back in the late 50's-early 60's? {Other than southeast Asia.} Reason I ask is, my Dad was gone on a lot of cruises back then, & I remember him singing both songs to me when he returned - he was quite the Australophile {I THINK it's because his antecedents had a lot in common with Australia's British founders ;-) } - as far as we know, he never OFFICIALLY went to VietNam until '68-'69 timeframe. AND, why did it take until 1974 for Australia to choose Waltzing Matilda as their national anthem? Are Australia & New Zealand still somewhat subject to the British monarchy?

Many thanks for that, DM. :-) After clicking on those I feel even more homesick--and I never realised just how strong the feeling could be.
Unfortunately Waltzing Matilda still isn't the official national anthem and very unlikely now ever to become it.The cultural cringe wins....
You may enjoy this:

which became a kind of unofficial national anthem during the America's Cup races off Fremantle. (the Aussie boat had the song blasting out from speakers on the support boat as it was towed out to the start line))

WHY were verses removed from "official" versions of Advance Australia Fair {see here: http://www.imagesaustralia.com/australiannationalanthem.htm }? They celebrate the HISTORY of your sovereign nation - I don't see where the multi-cultis could find anything to wank/whinge about - aren't national anthems supposed to instill national PRIDE?
